What’s your Open Space?

greg.hopton@email.com

Welcome.

What is the best coaching set up for you? What would most support an Open Space for you? These are coaching questions.

Before, at the start and during coaching I ask people what best works for them regarding a range of issues - so as to create the best environment for you.

Below I have created a resource to help you think through what might work best for you with some basic issues., and, if you are new to coaching, to give you a general feel for the shape of it.

These are based on my experience, and feedback, and so don’t represent everybody’s set up preferences - they are there to help you think about what does work for you, and why.

Factors that may influence this are - personality preferences, practicalities, and the nature of your topic/goal(s).

So, you are thinking about what would work best - welcome to The Open Space.

Packages

Thinking about quantity, frequency, and length of session.

Multi-Session package

This is the most common way people access coaching. At the start of the package, we’ll discuss your goals, preferences and the practicalities of life. We’ll agree a schedule based on this. Some guys like longer sessions, to really get into it, with plenty of time to reflect and action things in between. Others like shorter, more regular sessions. Lots of people also like to switch things up, part way through as they discover their preferences and progress. Some sessions can be outside, some online, some at the office – a mix is very common too.

Short & Sharp-Agile

Also used for pressing issues and urgencies in today’s agile environment. People like this approach as it may be 2 or 3 20 minute sessions, so is short and sharp, but allows sometime in-between sessions for reflection and progress.

One Off Session

I offer one time coaching sessions. People normally use these as an intro to coaching, or to focus on a specific topic – a more formatted session people have enjoyed is “discovering your own values” – it tends to be a fun one. Others have used these sessions to talk through, and find options/resolutions to challenges, and urgencies of the day. They tend to organised swiftly for this reason.

Location.

Thinking about where the sessions are physically.

In Person.

A lot of people prefer face to face, for the good old fashioned human contact that supports relationship building and a great “thinking partnership” (that’s what it is right?) – with this folks can feel safe and free to explore topics with the encouragement of a professional right there. Some clients have said that coaching face to face - using whiteboards, notes, resources - can be great for assimilating the big picture, with lots of info, and moving to action, or envisioning the steps of a big project.

Video.

Over the last year I’ve worked with people a lot on video, and, many people prefer it and have had great success, its a really great medium for coaching. For many clients, understandably, it’s easier to feel comfortable with a topic video chatting from home. People have fed back that video chats have enabled them to be more relaxed with coaching, and as such get more into it. This has supported clients be more expressive, think deeper / learn more. For this reason it’s a great option for people new to coaching. Clients have said that they have gone along with creative ways to explore topics at home in a way that they may not have done in person.

I have also coached people in various locations by video chat, including from the car (not driving) so its great for agility as well as comfort.

Finally (especially during this time of travel restrictions) it does mean that clients can choose a coach from anywhere in the world, and it cuts CO2 emissions even if you are 20mins down the road!

– working with culturally diversity of the people I do is one reason I love my job!

Out on the trail.

Being out in nature does not need introducing or promoting, right? My personal belief is the more humans and nature connect, the more they look after each other. The walk and talks I’ve enjoyed with clients have been great fun. These sessions have tended to help people “slow it down”, and reflect on where they are at, as well as get some perspective– I also notice the walking helps a gentle but firm commitment to action, and creative “thinking outside the box” solutions. For sure these sessions have always left people more fulfilled than when they arrived, and are a great perk for office/home based staff. I won’t bore you about the science of exercise and being in nature, the wild, but suffice to say these things are good for your immuno-regulatory system = supports wellbeing.

Phone.

Coaching over the phone has been very powerful for some clients who have reported that the not seeing of the coach really helped them focus in on the issue, and making tough decisions, instead of ones that may be for others. Coaching over the phone also works great with the “Short-Sharp” agile form of coaching

Over a Cuppa.

Some clients find productivity in the cafe atmosphere, when it’s just right. I work with clients to workout when and specifically where works best.  Like being ‘out on the trail’ office workers seem to get fresh perspective and energy from the surroundings. I’ve noticed this location has worked really well at the start of relationships, including introductions, as well as for activities with good levels of energy – brainstorming and appreciative inquiry (ask me about A1)
